Birth and Postpartum Doula

Hi, my name is Karen and I am birth and postpartum doula. I also am a certified childbirth educator, lactation counselor and registered nurse. I live in Saint Johns, Florida.

Are you pregnant and looking for guidance on what to expect during your pregnancy and upcoming birth? Would you like help deciding on your birth preferences or birth plan? Are you nervous about the labor process and would like someone with you who can support you and your partner as you navigate this life changing event? Maybe you’re looking for help after your baby/babies arrive. I provide birth and postpartum doula services including lactation counseling and childbirth education in the greater Jacksonville area, including St. Augustine, Florida.

I was not familiar with doulas over 25 years ago when I had my children. Even though I successfully gave birth to my two boys, I would have had a more pleasant and less medically invasive birth experience if I had a doula. So, I’m happy to provide this service for other mommas no matter what your birthing plans are. I’ll work with you and your partner to provide the birth experience you desire.

I’m trained and certified as a birth doula through DONA International. I’ve taken Hypnobirthing classes and a Spinning Babies workshop. I’m also VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarian) certified. I’m a Certified Childbirth Educator and Certified Lactation Counselor. Plus, I’m a Registered Nurse with experience working in postpartum and newborn nursery. If you’re looking for an in-network Tricare provider, I may be able to offer you birth doula services and lactation counseling at no cost. I also work with Pomelo/The Doula Network, which allows me to offer services to those with certain Medicaid plans.

Would you like more information? To set up a free consultation, contact me.

Hello, my name is Karen and I’m a momma to two grown sons. I’ve been a registered nurse in Minnesota and Florida for over 30 years and served in the Minnesota Army National Guard.

Included in my experiences I worked as a postpartum and nursery nurse as well as an in the home baby nurse/postpartum doula. My in-home experience includes day and overnight duties. As a certified birth doula, I hold one-on-one consultations, attend many births, and help during postpartum recovery. I’m also trained as a certified lactation counselor and childbirth educator. Therefore, I can assist with breastfeeding needs and teach you about pregnancy, labor and birth in a group or private setting.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated with every aspect of pregnancy, childbirth and babies. My personal and professional experiences allow me to provide caring prenatal, childbirth and postpartum support to other mommas here in northeast Florida. I would love to support you in creating and obtaining your ideal birth experience! Giving birth should be your greatest achievement, not your greatest fear. Let me help you as your doula.

To set up a free consultation, contact me.

If you think you are in labor, it is important to know when to go to the hospital. Here are some signs and guidelines to help you decide:

Regular Contractions: If you feel contractions that are coming regularly and getting closer together, it might be time to go to the hospital. For most first-time moms, it’s usually a good idea to go when contractions are about 5 minutes apart and lasting for about 1 minute each, for at least 1 hour.

Water Breaking: If your water breaks, and the fluid is cloudy, you should go to the hospital. This might feel like a big gush of fluid or a steady trickle. If you’re not having contractions yet, it’s important to inform your Doula.

Bleeding: If you see bright red blood, more than just spotting, you should go to the hospital right away. This could be a sign that something needs immediate attention.

Decreased Baby Movement: If you notice your baby is not moving as much as usual, or if you’re worried about your baby’s movements, it’s a good idea to go to the hospital to make sure everything is okay.

Intense Pain: If you are experiencing very intense pain that doesn’t go away with contractions, you should go to the hospital. This could be a sign of something needs further investigation.

Feeling Uneasy: If you just feel that something is not right, trust your instincts and go to the hospital. It’s always better to be safe and get checked by a healthcare professional.

It’s helpful to talk to your Doula before you go into labor. They can give you specific advice based on your health and pregnancy. They might suggest slightly different guidelines depending on your situation.

Remember to have a plan ready. Know how to get to the hospital. Have your bag packed with essentials, and make sure someone is available to take you if needed.

Labor can be unpredictable, so it’s important to listen to your body. Don’t hesitate to seek medical help if you’re unsure. Your healthcare team is there to support you and make sure you and your baby are safe.

Doulas and midwives play distinct yet complementary roles in the realm of childbirth, offering support and guidance to expectant mothers in unique ways. While both professions revolve around assisting women during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum periods, they differ significantly in their scope of practice, training, and responsibilities.

Midwives are trained healthcare professionals who specialize in providing medical care and assistance throughout the childbirth process. They possess formal education in nursing and/or midwifery, enabling them to offer clinical expertise, perform medical examinations, administer medications, and conduct deliveries. Midwives often work in hospitals, birthing centers, or provide home birth services, overseeing the entire childbirth journey, from prenatal care to postnatal support. Their focus extends beyond emotional support to include clinical assessments and interventions, ensuring the health and safety of both mother and baby during childbirth.

Conversely, doulas primarily offer non-medical, emotional, educational, and physical support to expectant mothers before, during, and after childbirth. Unlike midwives, doulas do not have medical training or authority to perform clinical procedures or make medical decisions. Instead, they provide continuous emotional reassurance, comfort measures, advocacy, and practical guidance to help women navigate the childbirth experience with confidence and empowerment. Doulas prioritize creating a supportive environment, offering encouragement, relaxation techniques, and assisting with birth plans, ensuring that mothers feel heard, respected, and empowered throughout the birthing process.

In essence, while midwives focus on providing comprehensive medical care and ensuring safe childbirth outcomes, doulas specialize in emotional support, advocacy, and enhancing the overall childbirth experience for mothers and their families. Both professions contribute invaluable support to expectant mothers, each offering a unique set of skills and expertise to facilitate a positive and empowering childbirth experience.

VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) and TOLAC (Trial of Labor After Cesarean) are terms encountered in discussions surrounding childbirth, particularly among women who have previously undergone a cesarean section (C-section). VBAC refers to the delivery of a baby through the vaginal canal after a previous C-section. TOLAC specifically denotes the attempt to have a vaginal birth after a cesarean. These options offer women who had a prior C-section the possibility of a vaginal delivery, providing they meet certain criteria and are suitable candidates.

One of the primary considerations for VBAC and TOLAC is the safety of both the mother and the baby. While vaginal birth is generally associated with fewer complications and faster recovery compared to C-sections, there are risks. These risk can include uterine rupture. Uterus rupture is a rare but serious complication where the C-section scar on the uterus tears during labor. Healthcare providers carefully assess factors such as the reason for the previous C-section, the type of uterine incision, and the presence of any medical conditions that may affect the likelihood of a successful VBAC or TOLAC.

The decision to pursue VBAC or TOLAC involves discussions between the expectant mother and her healthcare team. They will weigh the potential benefits and risks based on individual circumstances. Several factors must be considered, such as maternal age, medical history, and the interval between pregnancies. Empowering women with the knowledge and support to make informed decisions is crucial in ensuring positive outcomes.

Yes, you might still want to have a doula even if you’re having a c-section. A doula is a person who provides support to a mother before, during, and after childbirth. They can be helpful in many ways, even if your birth is through a cesarean section.

First, a doula can help you prepare for the c-section. They can give you information about what to expect and answer any questions you might have. This can help you feel less nervous and more confident about the surgery.

During the c-section, a doula can be a great support to both you and your partner. Even though they cannot perform medical tasks, they can stay with you, hold your hand, and keep you calm. They can also help your partner feel more comfortable and less anxious by explaining what’s happening.

After the surgery, a doula can support you in your recovery. They can help you with things like breastfeeding, holding your baby, and moving around. They can also be there to listen if you need to talk about how you’re feeling. This emotional support can be very important as you adjust to life with your new baby.

Additionally, a doula can help you plan for the birth and make sure your wishes are known to the medical team. They can help you write a birth plan, which is a document that tells the doctors and nurses what you want during the birth. This can include things like whether you want music playing in the room, if you want to hold your baby right after the surgery, and other personal preferences.

Having a c-section is a big event, and having a doula can make it a more positive experience. They provide emotional and physical support, and they can help you feel more prepared and confident. So, even if you are having a c-section, a doula can still be a valuable part of your birth team.

One in 7 women experiences Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder (PMAD), formerly referred to as postpartum depression. If you feel like you’re on an emotional roller coaster after giving birth, you’re not alone. Did you know having a birth doula may decrease your risk of developing postpartum depression. Baptist Health offers a free virtual postpartum support group for new moms. Baptist Health Postpartum Support Group

What is PMAD?

Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder encompasses a spectrum of emotional and psychological challenges that women may face during pregnancy and the postpartum period. These disorders include postpartum depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and, in rare cases, postpartum psychosis. PMAD is distinguished from the “baby blues,” which typically last for a few days to two weeks post-birth and involve mild mood swings, irritability, and tearfulness. PMAD, however, is more intense and persistent, potentially lasting for months if untreated, and can significantly impair a mother’s ability to function and care for her baby.

The prevalence of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder is significant. It affects approximately 15-20% of new mothers, though the rates can be higher in certain populations. Factors contributing to PMAD include hormonal changes, previous mental health issues, a history of trauma, lack of support, and stressful life events. Symptoms often involve feelings of overwhelming sadness, anxiety, irritability, and guilt. Physical symptoms like fatigue and changes in sleep or appetite, may also be a factor. These conditions not only affect the mother’s well-being. They also have potential implications for the baby’s development and the overall family dynamic.

Treatments for PMAD are multi-faceted, typically involving a combination of psychotherapy, medication, and support groups. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy (IPT) are particularly effective in addressing the negative thought patterns and relationship issues associated with PMAD. Antidepressants may also be prescribed, particularly in cases where symptoms are severe. Additionally, support from family, friends, and healthcare providers plays a crucial role in recovery. Increasing awareness and understanding of PMAD among new mothers and their support networks can lead to earlier detection and more effective management, helping to ensure healthier outcomes for both mother and child.
